Abstract/Summary:
Tai Yang Zhao Zai Sang Gan He Shang is one of the representative works of Ding Ling,a famous writer in China, which has received attention since it came out.At present, scholars mainly focus on the narrative mode and characterization of such a classic, and studies on its English translation are scarce.Sociosemiotics,as a discipline combining semiotics with sociology, studies meaning of signs in the social culture and social context, which goes beyond the simple linguistic level.Translation is an important social activity. The application of sociosemiotics to translation is helpful to conduct translation studies more comprehensively. As the literature depicting the period of land reform, the content of Tai Yang Zhao Zai Sang Gan He Shang is rich in meaning. This thesis applies the semantic analysis model under the perspective of sociosemiotics to conduct a contrastive analysis of Chinese and English to investigate the transfer of meanings of the novel in its English translation(translated by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang)from three aspects: referential meaning, linguistic meaning and pragmatic meaning.Through the study, the author finds that the meanings of the original text are almost transferred completely in the English translation. However,no translation is perfect, and a small quantity of deficiencies are unavoidable, among which deficiency in referential meaning is the least;deficiency in pragmatic meaning is concentrated in associative meaning while deficiency in linguistic meaning is the most serious at the phonological and lexical level. In addition, this thesis also analyzes the reasons for such deficiencies. Finally, this thesis summarizes the examples in which the translators successfully transfer the meanings of the original text in order to provide guidance on the future retranslation of the novel and translation practice of other literary works. From this point, this thesis has certain practical significance.
