Influence Of The Translator’s Habitus On The Translation Of Chinese Martial Arts Fictions

This thesis takes Legends of the Condor Heroes I: A Hero Born translated by Anna Holmwood as the research object,adopts the translator’s habitus theory put forward by Simeoni in 1998 and correspondingly establishes a new theoretical model under its guidance,so as to analyze and illustrate the relation between translator’s habitus and translation in Legends of the Condor Heroes I: A Hero Born.This thesis adopts the research method of case study,document analysis and comparative methods.On the basis of a description of the forming process of Holmwood’s translator’s habitus and factors influencing the formation of her translator’s habitus,it applies the self-built theoretical model of translator’s habitus to explore the influence of Holmwood’s translator’s habitus on her selection of source text before translating,application of translation methods during translating and publicity of the translated book after translating,especially her unique roles in the above three stages.Meantime,it summarizes the validity of the proposed theoretical model and Holmwood’s style of translating.It is held by this thesis that Holmwood’s habitus as a translator consists of initial habitus before translating,professional habitus during translating and translatorial habitus after translating.She developed her translation competence,formed her view on translation,selected the source text and cultivated the international literary market with unique insights under her initial habitus.She adopted various translation methods,i.e.word-for-word translation,paraphrase,deletion,integration and simplification,in translating character names,martial arts’ moves and fighting scenes,and formed her style of translating with the help of her professional habitus in her attempt to “promote Chinese martial arts and win readers’ acceptance”.She also attached great importance to the publicity of literary translation product through her interaction with readers and cooperation with the other translator Gigi Zhang based on her unique translatorial habitus.
