The 85 New Wave is an important turning point in the history of Chinese contemporary art.Although it seemed to have certain era-limitations,it has indeed won unprecedented art creative freedom and has profoundly influenced the development of Chinese contemporary art since then. From the perspective of art history research, the 85 New Wave still has a lot of value yet to be explored. The creation phenomenon based on Chinese characters and its deformation is one of them. This thesis takes this as the starting point of research, and selects the artistic creations of Chinese characters that made in the 85 New Wave period by Gu Wenda,Wu Shanzhuan, and Xu Bing as the research objects,as well as deeply combining the social background and cultural context before and after the formation of the 85 New Wave. This thesis also explores the clues and important values of the avant-garde art creation that may be overlooked in the key historical node between the period of the "Cultural Revolution" and "Reform and Opening".In view of the above research scope, this thesis attempts to answer two main questions: first, what are the humanistic and social factors that promote the visual language and aesthetic concepts in these artists’ creations;and second, how these ideas and concepts are expressed and shown in these works of art that related to Chinese characters.
