Coursebook is the most important media and plays an important role in language teaching and learning.College English Curriculum Requirements points out college English teaching should follow the principle of different guidance for different schools and teaching students in accordance of their aptitude.E College English and Newstart College English are most representative coursebooks designed for Arts and P.E.majors.At present,from a general survey of relevant documents,there is no comparative analysis of these two sets of coursebooks.Based on a lot of coursebook analysis theories,this study discusses and evaluates these two sets of coursebook from macro and micro perspectives through text analysis and questionnaire survey.It is aimed at three questions:(1)What are similarities and differences between E College English and Newstart College English in macroscopic view?(2)What are similarities and differences between E College English and Newstart College English in microscopic view?(3)What are the students’ view on these coursebooks?It has been discovered that these two sets of coursebook have a lot of commonness and individuality.(1)In macro level,both of them are designed following the ideology of different guidance for different schools and teaching students in accordance of their aptitude and put more emphasis on material selection to satisfy the needs of students.E College English has a complete structure involving listening,speaking,reading,and writing.Newstart College English has abundant course resources for students’ autonomous learning.(2)In micro level,these two sets of coursebook adjust the difficulty of language knowledge and pay more attention to the cultivation of language applied ability.At the same time,both of them involve culture learning,which embodies the humanity of college English.E College English do well in word annotation and exercise design.Newstart College English puts emphasis on readingability development,which neglects the development of writing.(3)The feedback of student shows that the difficulty of coursebook can meet the needs of most students.And students expect more leaning forms used in language teaching.Therefore,the author attempts to propose some suggestions for compilers and users,hoping to provide some help in the revision and exploration of these two sets of coursebook.
