Grammar teaching has always been the focus of debate among researchers in China. Some scholars think that grammar is the most important part of English learning based on grammar translation method, and they must spend a lot of time to learn grammar. On the other hand, based on situational teaching method and listening and speaking method, some scholars think that the focus of English learning is oral English teaching and oppose grammar teaching.According to the concept of curriculum standard, grammar teaching should give consideration to form, meaning and function. Therefore, this paper uses Larsen Freeman’s Three-Dimensional Grammar Theory to investigate the use of object clauses of middle school students, which provides more effective suggestions for English grammar teaching.Larsen Freeman believes that grammatical competence includes three dimensions: form, meaning and use.students should not only know how it is constructed, but also know what meaning it expresses, when and why it is used. Her theory not only affirms the importance of grammar learning, but also proposes to pay attention to the cultivation of students’ grammar application ability.Grammar learning can not only focus on one aspect, and the three aspects of form, meaning and use are indispensable as a whole. She also puts forward the word "grammaring"(grammar skills). She believes that grammar skills are the ultimate goal of learning grammar, which can be combined with listening, speaking, reading and writing continue to develop. She pays more attention to the cultivation of students’ grammar application ability and the proper use of grammar in appropriate situations. On the basis of Larsen Freeman’s Three-Dimensional Grammar Theory, this study compiles English grammar test papers from the perspective of object clause, and tests 120 junior middle school students in Changchun with the questionnaire of English grammar learning status. Finally, the research results are obtained through data analysis. The survey questions are as follows:(1)How are the three dimensions of object clauses used by middle school students?(2)what are the differences among middle school students with differentEnglish proficiency in the three dimensions of object clause use?The results show that students have the best mastery of form, the second ismeaning, and the poor mastery of when and why to use it.And the students with relatively good scores have better mastery of these three dimensions than the students with poor scores. It is also a direct proof that the current English grammar teaching in our country pays more attention to formal teaching and ignores the specific meaning and application, which leads to students not being able to take the initiative and do not know when to use it.Because teachers do not guide students correctly in grammar teaching, the questionnaire shows that students are more resistant to grammar learning and find it boring and difficult to understand,so this paper also provides corresponding suggestions on how to improve students’ enthusiasm and English grammar teaching.
