There are 25 ethnic groups living in beautiful Yunnan where is known as colorful clouds.Zhang Nan,the distinguished composer in Yunnan,has created many brilliant masterpieces by making good use of the resources in Yunnan and his knowledge.He spent half of his life in Yunnan Honghe(lit.red river in Chinese)Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture,Yunnan province.Thus,most of his works were based on the folk music of Yi people in Honghe.With a combination of modern techniques,Violin Concerto in D Shang Mode: Red River Tone Poem is full of music elements of ethnic groups in Honghe.It has won the first Silver Medal of the Golden Bell Awards.This work was presented as a concerto,which is a rare genre form among many musical works in Yunnan.Even if there are many works that created by the locals applied musical elements of ethnic groups,a few of them can successfully integrate the style and technique of music of ethnic groups and western music.However,this works changed people’s stereotype to traditional music of ethnic groups in Yunnan,which speeds up the integration of ethnic music and symphony,and makes good preparation for culture of ethnic music in Yunnan go out of China to the world.The author works on four aspects of the work.Firstly,an introduction is given to the composer and his masterpieces.Secondly,with the application of thinking of modern music creation,the author analyzes the techniques of creation,such as harmony,musical structure,polyphony,and instrumentation.The third part is the application of musical elements of ethnic groups in the work.Last but not least,it is the significance of this work to promote the creation and development of traditional ethnic music style works,as well as some insights the author gained after studying the work,which is intended to inspire more students majoring in composing to broaden their horizons and creative thinking.This thesis focuses on creative techniques from the perspective of compositional technology theory,and does not elaborate on the emotional expression.
