Critical discourse analysis originated from critical linguistics in the 1970 s.The focus of critical discourse analysis involves unfair phenomena and the relationship about ideology and power in the society. The purpose of critical discourse analysis is to discover the hidden ideology through the form of language.Accompanied by the development of society,it’s widely applied to news discourses. Therefore,it has practical effect and important meaning to carry out critical discourse analysis for news discourses in view of its objectivity and fairness. The research of this thesis were news reports on President Trump’s visiting to North Korea. The author separately chose 13 pieces of relevant news discourses from VOA and CNN as corpuses and the whole words were mostly 9800 words.Simultaneously, the author adopted the combination of qualitative and quantitative researches and used UAM Corpus as research tool.Based on these, the author came up with three research questions:(1)What were the language features of news discourses from perspective of transitivity?(2)What were the distributions of two main reporting speeches and verbs in the news discourses?(3)What kind of ideology did the reporters transmit about these news discourses? As for the answers of three research questions: firstly, the author used transitivity to answer the first research question. The collected corpuses were divided into different clauses and judged their language features.Secondly, the author used patterns of speech reporting and reporting verbs of Leech and Short to answer the second research question. The author mainly analyzed the distributions of direct speech and indirect speech and reporting verbs.Thirdly, the author adopted Fairclough’s Three-Dimension Analysis to answer the third research question respectively from interpretation and explanation. It arrived the conclusion that different distributions of processes were presented from transitivity. They were material process, relational process, verbal process and mental process. These different clauses showed the understandings and explanations of reporters.Secondly, direct speech and indirect speech had the different distributions. It was obviously that direct speech took higher proportion than indirect speech. It indicated that reporters cited the original utterances in order to strengthen persuasion of the news.In addition, the diversity of reporting verbs also illustrated the objectivity of news reports.Thirdly,as for the interpretation, the author used modal verbs to interpret the discourses and they showed attitude and tone of the reporters. It found that “would” and “will” took the highest proportions. As for the explanation, political, economics and culture were the important factors for the production of discourses.According to analysis,it showed that reporters conveyed the great self-confidence and better expectation of the United States to cooperate and develop with North Korea so as to transmit the spirit of willing to help others and the optimistic and positive ideologies of America. There are two main contributions of this thesis: firstly,it should be reasonable to adopt critical perspective to understand news discourses and it’s not effective to explain the hidden ideology only through literal meaning.Secondly, the generation of news discourse must include social and cultural background factors. Therefore,as for the interpretation of news discourse, the readers should take different backgrounds and standpoints into consideration.
