This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of Surviving Schizophrenia written by American author Richard Carlson. The whole story takes the author himself as the prototype. He has been struggling from mental disease for many years and finally restored his health condition with the help of his family and psychiatrists. There has been no Chinese version of this book yet.Fiberead Inc.,an internet platform, recruited translators for the book. The translator was authorized to take the task with another translator. The report is composed of five chapters.Chapter one describes the background information of the translation task, entruster’s requirements and analysis of the linguistic and stylistic features of the source text.Chapter two gives a brief description of the translation process.Adequate reading preparations, glossary preparations and theory preparations helped the translator save much time and energy in translating terminologies and proper nouns. The three steps of translation process, namely the first draft, checking and polishing, and proofreading and revision, guaranteed good feedback from the entruster.Chapter three illustrates the guiding theory. The source text is presented with a lot of dialogues and reminiscence, reflecting the author’s true feelings.Besides, there are many medical words. Therefore the translator chose Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation and Semantic Translation as guiding theory, which helps to convey the concise textual information and evoke feelings of target readers similar to that of original readers.Chapter four focuses on case analysis. To make the target text natural and smooth, the translator flexibly translated words, used conversion, division and combination to deal with long sentences, and tried best to maintain structural and emotional cohesion by using conjunctions and appropriate words. In the last chapter, the translator introspects the gains and shortcomings she got from this task.In summary, this practice gives the translator a great opportunity to improve her translation ability and learn some new information, which makes the translator have more confidence to take similar tasks in the future.
