A Study On Smart Cat Graded Chinese Readers

Under the condition that the Chinese language craze continues to heat up,Chinese graded readers have entered the stage,which has gradually attracted the attention of the academia.However,it is currently facing a severe test of late start,shortage of quantity and uneven quality,the number of related studies is also small.it is an urgent task to make a third-party survey of the existing graded Chinese readers,summarize the experience and make up for the deficiencies.Therefore,this paper selects the "Smart Cat" graded readers which was Published by Beijing Language and Culture University Press in 2016 as the research object as a pointcut to investigate the current writing concept and writing characteristics of the latest graded readers so as to provide reference for the compilation of future Chinese readers.This paper studies the project respectively,including Chinese characters,vocabulary,lengths,practice,internal to mesh the DST complexity,Zhang Ningzhi Readability formula and Guo Wanghao’s Readability formula three gauge.We use the data measured by the rulers presents the hierarchical setting of each inspection item.The DST complexity is used to measure vocabulary variety and complexity,Guo Wanghao’s Readability formula is used to calculate the difficulty of Chinese characters、text words and average sentence lengths and to calculate the readability of readings.we use Zhang Ningzhi’s Readability formula as a means of testing the reliability of data results of DST complexity and Guo Wanghao’s formula.The results shows that the difficulty of "Smart Cat" increases in a spiral form,"rise" is mainly reflected between the level,and "spiral" is reflected in each level.The grading is reasonable to a certain extent,which is mainly reflected in paying equal attention to grading and coherence,and reducing the difficulty as the grade increases to give readers buffer and accumulation time."Smart Cat" has a high vocabulary coverage rate and repetition rate,paying attention to the matting and consolidation of words.the results of this study also indicate that there are cross-correlation between many research indicators.At the same time,there are some deficiencies in the details of this set of reading materials,such as the high density of new words,the excessive vocabulary,the large gap between the front and the behind half of the article length,and the poor practice species of level L2 and L3.In addition,we found that the "HSK Vocabulary Outline" over-emphasized the number of vocabulary,which led to a weaker reference.Based on the analysis of the "Smart Cat",we put forward some feasible suggestions for the preparation of Chinese graded reading materials,in order to make some meager efforts for the better development of Chinese graded reading materials.
