Feature binding is that people usually do not realize that they have analyzed the features of the object, but always regard the features of the object and the object as a unified whole. The research of feature binding in working memory is mainly about storage mechanism and capacity. The debate over the mechanism of visual working memory storage is whether to store an entire object or a single feature,or whether both affect object representation. There are four types of capacity models for visual working memory: the slot model, the flexible resource model, and two new models: the slot-resource model and the slot-average model. There is also a growing body of research on the effects of attention on the representation of visual working memory, such as whether attention level has an effect on feature binding, and whether the distance between objects in the experiment also has an effect on feature binding. This paper will make further research on these problems. The first study explored how feature binding affects the storage unit of visual working memory. This study was divided into two experiments: one studied visual working memory storage unit at same quantity of characteristics and different number of objects, the other studied visual working memory storage unit at one object and different quantity of characteristics. Each experiments was divided into two kinds of objects with the same dimensional feature binding and different dimensional feature binding. We adopted a within-subject design by using change detection paradigm. In order to study the effect of feature binding on visual working memory representation in different object numbers, the second study used 3(number of objects:1 / 2 / 3)× 3(number of features of object:1 / 2 / 3)two-factors within subjects design by using change detection paradigm, and the dependent variable is the detection accuracy of visual working memory. It is divided into two kinds of objects with the same dimensional feature binding and different dimensional feature binding. The third study,we investigated the effect of interference distance on feature binding objects in visual working memory at different attention levels. We adopted 2(attention level: focused attention / lack of attention)× 3(interferential object: near vertical / near horizontal / far diagonal)three-factors within subjects design by using change detection paradigm. The dependent variable was the detection accuracy of visual working memory. The results show that:The effects of feature binding in the same dimension and in different dimensions on visual working memory representation are different. The storage unit of the object of feature binding in different dimensions is based on the object, and the storage unit of the object of feature binding in the same dimension is not strictly based on the object,so the features will affect visual working memory resources. Results support feature-object dual-storage mechanism. The influence of feature binding on the representation of visual working memory is different in different object numbers. The capacity model of visual working memory of the object binding by different dimension features is based on slot mode. The object binding by the same dimension features is not strictly based on the object, and features will contend visual working memory resources, supporting slot-average models.Different attention levels have an effect on feature binding in visual working memory, and the accuracy of attention concentration level is higher than that of attention dispersion level. At the level of distraction, the distance of the interference term affect the representation of feature binding in visual working memory. The closer the distance, the greater the interference. The three feature object needs more attention. |
