A Study On Stereotypical Portrayal Of Adolescent And Child Aggression In Chinese Mainland Films

Many studies have shown that media violence can affect junior people’s views and attitudes towards the actual world.For China with film censorship,to elucidate the aggression behaviors in Chinese mainland movies,we selected children and adolescent group,from the perspective of pseudo-environment which focused construction and practical issues as the starting point,with referred to beauty-goodness stereotype,role identification and social learning theory,we carried out a content analysis about media portrayals of adolescent and child aggressive behaviors,investigated the portrayal bias of the traits of character’ s aggression And when children watched movies,they not only be attracted by the content plot,but also by the media characters who similar to their age and gender.They might apply the stereotypes learned from movies into real life.Such as thinking the ugly person must be bad.Since children and adolescents are the development stages of gender and identity,it is necessary to sort out some of stereotypes in the film to avoid misrepresentation in the cognition of children and adolescents.Therefore,it is necessary to sort out and clarify the nature of the aggressive information in the film,and for parents,which improve intervention and guide children to watch the film,to avoid the wrong ideas and behaviors from infiltrating into the cognition of teenagers and childrenWe used content analysis and crawled Douban Film Website with python,the main platform for watch movies,with the region "mainland China" as the main keyword,and finally got 487 movies in "mandarin".Then we conducted manual screening of related content and finally obtained 49 movie samples about children and adolescents.Three coders coded each scene of aggression and recorded the aggression behavior of each aggressor against the victim 1122 aggressions were recorded,of 692 aggressions belonged to the juvenile.The main research conclusions were the followingFirst,there were a lot of aggressive behaviors in the current movies,the most aggressive behaviors of juvenile portrayed in the movie were violence(41.185%).Second,analysis of the traits of the character found that aggression behaviors were mainly derived from the male(62.861%),attractiveness(59.971%),and positive characters(50.434%),and reality(53.179%),justify(23.1%)and humor(25.3%).Third,the result showed that there was gender stereotype in aggressive behavior,men tend to use violence,women tend to use indirect aggressive behavior;movies depict existed beauty-goodness stereotype,which tend to portrayal ugly,negative characters,animals use violence,and good-looking,positive characters were more justify and rewards;the reality was more in indirect aggression,and the fantasy was more in violence.
