As a new digital teaching resource,micro lectures are widely used in English teaching.English is a compulsory course for college students,which plays a key role in developing students’ autonomous learning ability.It is found that college students’ English autonomous learning ability is poor.Therefore,it is necessary to cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability.Based on constructivism,intrinsic motivation theory and metacognitive strategy,this study intends to explore the influence of micro lectures on English reading achievements and English reading autonomous learning ability.Methods like experiment,questionnaire and interview are adopted in this study.The subjects are freshmen from xxx university in Xi’an.This study aims to answer two questions.First,does micro lectures affect reading achievements;second,does micro lectures affect English reading autonomous learning ability(self-determination of reading aims,self-usage of reading strategies,self-evaluation to reading results).Through data analysis,the findings are as follows: micro lectures cannot significantly improve English reading achievements;micro lectures have significantly improved the ability of students to set English reading goals;micro lectures have significantly improved the ability of students to use reading strategies independently;however,micro lectures cannot significantly improve the ability of students to evaluate reading process independently.The author interviewed some students in experiment class and found that there may be the following reasons: first,the experiment time is short and students did not consolidate knowledge after class;second,micro-lectures inspired students’ learning interest and micro-lectures have clear teaching aims;thirdly,students can use reading strategies effectively and teachers play a guiding role;fourthly,students are not enthusiastic and students have strong instrumental motivation to learn English.Therefore,the following suggestions are provided: teachers should use micro lectures in college English teaching;efforts should be made to improve students’ awareness of self-reading;teachers need to strengthen the guidance and supervision of students;teachers should help students evaluate English reading process.
