| Most scholars are attracted to the genre analysis which was developed in the 1980 s.Academic discourse has increasingly aroused scholarly interests in research fields.Since the genre analysis has long focused more on the RAs,as an important genre, the longer Ph D dissertations don’t receive much attention. The abstract is regarded as a core part in Ph D dissertation, which presents the content of research and helps readers retrieve quickly the information they care about.Based on Hyland’s five-move pattern, the current thesis investigates Ph D dissertation abstracts by American students across hard-applied science and soft-applied science.Besides, the SPSS software were used to examine the data. For rhetorical move, majority of dissertation abstracts in hard and soft-applied fields mirror Hyland’s IPMPr C pattern and the method move are regarded as the obligatory rhetorical unit.Significant cross-disciplinary variations are found. It reveals that the introduction move is adopted frequently in the hard-applied science than soft-applied science.Besides, the hard-applied field has a complete theoretical system so that English abstracts are achieved by adopting more rhetorical moves. The variations are also observed in the steps.Within the introduction move, the hard-applied sciences tend to present the problem is worth investigating and to ensure their research is viable and practical to real-world issues. However, the soft-applied sciences tend to make a comprehensive illustration about the content, working principal, and knowledge of the research topic. As for linguistic feature, the writers in hard-applied fields tend to use present tense combined with present perfect tense in introduction move, while soft-applied sciences use more simple present tense in the conclusion move. Both hard and soft-applied sciences tend to employ the active voice, with the exception of method move. It’s found that the first person plural “We” is predominately used in the hard-applied science, while the “I” appears frequently in the soft-applied fields. It is expected that this study could enrich the genre analysis of Ph D abstracts in soft-applied and hard-applied disciplines which hasn’t received much attention before. It is hoped that it could offer both the Chinese scholars and students insights in Ph D dissertation abstracts writing. |
