| This paper takes the music narrative of the novel as the starting point,and takes four of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels(A Pale View of Hill,Never Let Me Go,The Unconsoled,Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall)as the research objects.On the basis of intensive reading of the text,this paper takes the theory as a guide to interpret the musical imagery in the novel.It also sees the fate tragedy,self-struggle,loss of identity,and internationalization presented by Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels in a whole new perspective.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,the main body of the paper consists of three chapters.The introduction part mainly brings forward the definition of the novel’s music narrative in this paper.Besides,it reviews Kazuo Ishiguro’s relationship with music and his exploration and his attempt on the musical narrative path of the novel.It also combs the research situation home and abroad,and clarifies the significance and value of choosing to study Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels from the perspective of music narrative of the novel.The first chapter revolves around the symbolic fate of musical symbols in Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels.By combing the theory,this paper discusses whether the emotional meaning can be expressed by musical symbols.And then it has the analysis of signifier and signified of instrument in Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels.It points out the metaphor of instrument such as cello,saxophone and guitar in the novel.At the same time,this paper analyzes that Kazuo Ishiguro’s quoted the music name as the title of the novel directly and the reference to the music name in the narrative process is a symbolic representation of the fate of the characters.The second chapter focuses on the fate expression of the musical form in Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels.It analyzes that in Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels,the author uses the musical structure of the sonata to interweave the fragmented story and the complex destiny of the characters,which shows a broad picture of modern life.Then it’s theanalysis of the author uses the strength of emotions and plots to express the fate of the character.And then it analyzes the author reflects the emotions of the characters and reveals their survival situations through repeated words and plots.The third chapter explores the deep meaning of music in Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels.This chapter lifts the mystery of the musical elements in the novel and explains the subtle presence of music in the novel.It explores the author’s questioning of identity,exploration of self-expression and the author’s concept of international novels under music.Besides,it reveals that music is a group identity for music lovers in his novel,a kind of self-expression method for marginal groups,a way to achieve the internationalization of novel creation.The conclusion points out that in Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels,music narrative is both a means and an intention,both instrumental and aesthetic,both a technique for novel writing and a way for the author to express his emotions.At the same time,the musical narrative of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels remind and inspire us to focus our attention on this issue and provide a new perspective on literary research. |
