| The White Tiger, the first novel of Indian writer Aravind Adiga, has aroused international attention in recent years, which has won him the leading English literary award Man Booker Prize in 2008.This novel has rich historical and political connotation, but there are few scholars studying its historical and political significance from the perspective of new historicism. Therefore,in view of the concepts of subversion, containment, and self-fashioning,the social and political significance are worth exploring.Based on Greenblatt’s subversion, containment and self-fashioning,it is necessary to explore the subversion and containment forces and self-fashionion in Balram and the operation of power in India.According to the paradox of subversion and inclusion, this thesis reveals the cultural mechanism of obedience and rebellion, resistance and suppression of Balram.Furthermore, the analysis of Balram’s self-fashioning is to expose the conflict between the “self” and the mainstream discourse power, and to reveal that his consciousness is shaped in the joint forces of history and culture. Finally, although Balram’s individual will is realized, the forces of social activities, such as religion, state power and social class, become the internal binding force of self-fashioning,which reveals that the limitations of history still exist in the process of globalization.Once implemented, the system of human society becomes a part of the social operation mode, and also affects individuals’ social identity construction. |
