Spoken English ability is an important part of students’ language skill.Ministry of Education on Actively Promote English Curriculum in Elementary School points out: “English course should be set in Grade three in elementary school.English teaching in primary school should adopt various forms of activity that conform to the learning habits and characteristics of primary school students”.However,the questionnaire survey to students’ learning interest that this research has conducted on primary school students indicates that elementary school students have low level of learning initiative and relatively poor ability in comprehensive spoken English.Apparently,it’s of great significance to seek feasible activity teaching strategies and apply activity teaching into elementary school spoken English class.In that case,this research starts,aiming to improve students’ English speaking.Firstly,this thesis introduces the concept and development of activity teaching and sorts out the related research work done both at home and abroad.Secondly,the students in the fifth grade of an elementary school in Xinzheng City have been selected as research subjects to conduct a teaching experiment.Starting from the design principles of activity teaching as interestingness,pertinence,operability,life-orientation,subjectivity and openness,and following the four-step teaching processes as warm up,presentation,practice and consolidation,a three-month teaching experiment of activity teaching has been carried out.Then,questionnaire and spoken English test are adopted to verify the effectiveness of activity teaching in improving students’ English learning interest and the spoken English proficiency.The students are divided into two groups: experimental class and control class.The experimental class adopts activity teaching,while the control class exploits traditional teaching.At the end of the teaching practice,the questionnaire survey and spoken English test are conducted on those students.The data of the questionnaire shows that the students’ English learning interest has been greatly improved compared with that before the experiment.The result of the spoken English test shows that students’ spoken English proficiency in experimental class improved greatly.Lastly,the thesis puts forward some advice on how to improve spoken English proficiency and the English learning interest of the elementary school students.This thesis tries to innovate teaching methods by carrying out activity teaching in spoken English class of elementary students,and hopes to provide certain reference and guidance for teaching practice in elementary English class.
