Science fiction(SF)is a type of literature that is created based on reasonable assumptions under scientific conclusions, which has as much existence value and research significance as other branches of literature. As an imported literary genre, the emergency and development of Chinese SF literature have always been closely related to the translation and introduction of foreign science fiction. However,SF literature has always been at the marginal position in the literature system,so domestic academic circles have paid little attention to the research on SF translation. Therefore, the thesis will combine translation history with SF research to study the translation of foreign science fiction in the Republic era based on previous research and studies, revealing the factors that restricted or promoted the introduction of foreign SF in the period, and exploring the influence of SF translation on domestic SF.The thesis first gives a brief survey of SF translation in the Republic era. Then, historical and multi-dimensional description and analysis are made on SF translation in the Republic era from the aspects of the source texts, translating purposes, translation norms, translators and publishers based on Pym’s multiple causality theory and supplemented by Lefevere’s rewriting theory. Finally,it will summarize the main characteristics of SF translation during this period and reveal various factors that promoted or restricted SF translation. In terms of the source texts, more soft science fiction was introduced to China.Regarding the translating purposes, the reasons why translators were engaged in translating foreign science fiction are driven by the special times. For translation norms, the translation strategies chosen by the translators are very diverse, and more and more vernacular is used as the target language. As for the translators and publishers, most translators have multiple identities, and the number of publishers has been limited. The translation of foreign science fiction in the Republic era was a product under the influence of the special era.Although the volume is limited, they have influenced a great number of local SF writers, and have a profound impact on Chinese SF creation. Finally, the thesis is hoped to attract people’s attention on foreign SF introduction,so as to promote the development of domestic science fiction literature.
