Patrick Modiano has written more than 20 novels since his debut La Place de l’étoile, was in 1967,which shows the existence of youth in the context of postmodern history. In his novel world, the character image, era background and plot, created a lot of repetitive text structure and so on,embody the characteristics of the circulating cycle. The thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter analyzes the internal and external repetition of Modiano’s fictional world from the perspective of history. The first section mainly discusses the source of this text repetition, namely the context of post-modern fragmentation. The second section mainly discusses the textual repetition of the intertextuality of Modiano’s novels, which mainly consists of two kinds of intertextuality texts in the broad sense and the narrow sense, which constitutes the double repetition of the inner and outer parts of his literary world. There are not only the intertextuality of historical texts and cultural traditions, but also the high similarity and mutual complement of the text structure and the characters in the theme background between different novels, forming the intertextuality. The second chapter mainly analyzes the embodiment of Modiano’s cycle narrative in the text.In Modiano’s repeated and broken memory puzzles, the cyclic text is composed of cyclic narrative patterns.Modiano integrates the skills and factors of detective stories into his self-fiction writing, and adopts the fragmented narrative of patchwork patterns to form a unique tension in intertextual texts.Chapter three analyzes the characteristics of circulation in Modiano’s novels from the perspective of narrative time and space. His novel world through the staggered time sequence, the repeated narrative blank, the repeated narrative image and the same multidimensional space composition, formed the true and the unreal interlaced space-time opposition fusion, let the reader have the unique space-time experience. The fourth chapter analyzes the meaning of Modiano’s cycle narrative.First of all, this paper analyzes the origin of metempsychosis in Modiano’s novels through Nietzsche et al.’s concept of metempsychosis, then analyzes the lightness of life and the weight of existence in metempsychosis, and finally summarizes the shortcomings of Modiano’s creation. From the perspective of modernism, this paper analyzes the characteristics of the cyclic narrative in Modiano’s novels from the perspective of his intertextuality and the space-time construction of narrative.By combing through the repeated images and themes in Modiano’s novels, combining with the author’s personal experience and historical background, this paper analyzes the era implications and implications of eternal reincarnation in Modiano’s works, and interprets Modiano’s different understandings of Nietzsche’s "eternal reincarnation".That is to say,his novel presents the world he saw in the view of cyclic time: small modern people struggling in the vast river of time, struggling to find identity and self to confirm the meaning of human existence, trying to establish a kind of encounter with the eternal,to break through the survival dilemma of reincarnation. |
