| The paper makes a critical discourse analysis of the editorials from China Daily and the Washington Post on the first summit of DPRK-US leaders in Singapore and the second summit in Hanoi.Using Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional discourse analysis model and Halliday’s systemic functional grammar framework with UAM Corpus Tool and AntConc as analysis tools,this paper makes a quantitative analysis of the transitivity system,modality system,lexical choice,news sources and reporting modes of the 14 selected editorials.On this basis,qualitative analysis is carried out to explore the differences between the two newspaper’editorials on two related news publications on three levels:text,discourse practice and social practice.Through the analysis of transitivity system,modality system and lexical choice at the text level,the analysis of news sources and reporting modes at the discourse practice level,and finally the analysis of social practice level,it can be concluded that the focuses and attitudes of each newspapers’ editorials for two news events have not changed significantly,but great differences are found to exist between the two newspapers.The presupposition of the Washington Post’s editorials often reflects the tone of "mockery",presenting an overall pessimistic style with euphemism and uncertainty.Negative views are held on both news Tables.However,with no emotional tendency towards Trump or Kim,China Daily,being more neutral and objective,has an optimistic attitude towards the results of the conference.Through the analysis of the results,the author believes that there are historical and cultural reasons for the differences in the style of the two newspaper editorials.Therefore,readers should take a neutral view for the emotions and attitudes the editorials or news reports conveyed. |
