Conceptual blending is a series of cognitive activities that combine frames from different cognitive domains. The core in the process of conceptual blending:the mapping mechanism and the modes of conceptual blending are applied to help with the whole process of interpretation. This thesis is presented in the format of practice report which is based on the author’s real experience as the interpreter. This practice report systematically analyzes the operation of conceptual blending theory in interpretation and illustrates the specific applications in practice. The report is divided into four chapters, which are task description, task process, case analysis and conclusion. The first chapter introduces the interpretation task and its characteristics. The background of this interpretation is a speech themed as Research Progress of Intelligent Robot Technology. This task is characterized by strong professionalism, strong randomness, poor logic, and intensive information. The second chapter provides a full description of the process of this interpretation.including preparation process, the interpretation process, and quality control.Due to many site changes and the amount of filler words in speech, this interpretation practice is more difficult than imagined. The main way to deal with such difficulties at the scene is to use the conceptual blending theory listed in this article. The third chapter firstly elaborates the theory of conceptual blending, and introduces the core in the process of conceptual blending:the mapping mechanism and the modes of conceptual blending. The essence of mapping is the concrete manifestation of relationships between sentences or paragraphs.Finding a mapping in a passage can not only determine the core of a passage but also clarify the logical relationship in the sentence. The mapping relations are:changing relation, causation relation, time relation, characteristic and category and intention relation. There is a total of thirteen examples are listed to illustrate how the mapping mechanism helps the interpreter complete the logical analysis. After completing the mapping(logical analysis),interpreter needs to integrate the input of the information by splitting, merging, adding,or deleting. This form of information integration is divided into two categories:blending integration and cut-in integration.Blending integration consists of two practical methods:omission and addition;and cut-in integration consists of two practical methods, which are using subordinate clauses and summarizing. Then a total of ten examples are listed to illustrate how conceptual blending can be applied to help with the interpreter’s output. The fourth chapter summarizes how conceptual blending theory can be applied to help with the interpreter’s output. It is difficult to record all the information of the original language, consequently, mastering the mapping mechanism to sort out the context of the original frame, and to find out the logical relationship is necessary in interpretation. In terms of output expression, interpreter can choose the complexity of the sentence structure through the combination of blending and cut-in modes rather than using long subordinate clauses or using short sentences blindly. |
