| Michael Ondaatje is a writer from Sri Lankan,Canada.He is a famous writer in contemporary Canadian literature.As a novelist,Ondaatje’s novels are bold and original,for the writer Ondaatje,it is more literary to study how he writes his novels than what he writes his novels.This paper intends to explore the narrative strategies of ondaatje’s novel creation through The English Patient,Anil’s Ghost,Divisadero and War Lights.The thesis can be divided into three parts:introduction,main text and conclusion.The introduction introduces Michael Ondaatje’ life and creation and reviews the domestic and foreign research as well as his works.The body part is divided into three chapters.The first chapter challenging traditional narrative,mainly analyzes the narrative techniques of ondaatje’s novels.Collage narration is the most common narrative technique used by ondaatje,In addition to stylistic collage,he is also keen on the narrative collage of novel plots.According to the different theme expressions of each work,Ondaatje would choose different ways of text structure to highlight the theme of his works.The second chapter reconstruct the time dimension,mainly analyzes the narrative time of Ondaatje’s novels.The time always switches arbitrarily between the past and the present in Ondaatje’s novels,it shows the characteristics of time sequence being dispelled.Deliberately vague statements of time,the writing of fragmental time and the usage of a large amount of psychological time,the thickness of time in his novels is weakened.In this way,ondaatje reconstructed the time dimension of his novel.The third chapter create space effect,mainly analyzes the narrative space of Ondaatje’s novels.Based on the personal experience of space exile and the identity of the exile writer formed by the creation of mentality,Ondaatje fully controls the space element in his novel creation,narrative is carried by space,reconstructed spatial identity.And the thinking of the identity problem is integrated into the spatial setting,actively construct the third space,it creates a strong spatial effect for his novels.The former ideas of the thesis is reaffirmed in the conclusion part. |
