The Analysis Of The Syntactic Structure Of ’VP+ge+NP’ In Chinese From The View Of Generative Grammar

In this thesis,the syntactic structure of the phrase ’VP+ge+NP’,which transfers a negative meaning,such as suan ge pi,will be discussed.The analyses of the reason why this type of phrase can transfer a negative meaning in the previous research more focus on the pure character ge or analyze this phrase as a whole.However,the speciality on its syntactic level has seldom been involved.The phrase ’VP+ge+NP’ which transfers a negative meaning is supposed to differentiate from the’normal’ one in their syntactic structures.After looking up a great number of corpora about this type of phrase,it is extremely practical to analyze it in an approach of generative grammar put forward by Chomsky.In addition,with the going deep of the research work,what can be found out is that this type of phrase can also be’VP+NP+ge+NP’,such as suan ni ge pi.All in all,it can be deduced that the he phrase’VP+ge+NP’ which transfers a negative meaning can be ’VP(+NP)+ge+NP’.In order to make the analysis,the theories,such as X-bar theory,exceptional Case-marking(ECM)in Case theory,Extended Projection Principle(EPP)in theta theory,and PRO in the theories of empty category.It can be concluded that in the phrase of ’VP(+NP)+ge+NP’,the part of’(NP)+ge+NP’ is a clause governed by V in the principal clause,in which ge is the head of this clause.On this level,ge is just an abstract word that does not transfer any tangible semantics.With regard to ge in the‘normal’ ’VP+ge+NP’,it just plays the syntactic role of the Specifier of NP.Besides,on the semantic level,it just transfers the meaning of how many times an action happens,and is similar with a verb reduplication.This is the difference between the‘normal’ ’VP+ge+NP’ and ’(NP)+ge+NP ’.According to the analysis above,the research on the Chinese character ge has not been thorough enough till now.Throughout the analysis in the approach of generative grammar in this thesis,it can be discovered that there is syntactic similarity between ge in the phrase of ’VP(+NP)+ge+NP’ and the marker of the infinitive clause to.It can be explained that the linguistic phenomena of ECM,EPP,PRO,and etc.also exist in Chinese.Besides,it can also prove that generative grammar has a great explanatory power to analyze Chinese syntactic structures.
