This translation report is based on the Chinese-English translation practice of Chapter VI and VII in Father of China s Sky Eye:A Biography of Nan Rendong. Those chapters reproduce the difficult process of Nan and his team’s painstaking yet fruitless pursuit of international support, which gradually led to its self-reliance in technology and funds.Inspired by the manipulation school of thoughts and studies of ideology translation, this translation practice focuses on three kinds of ideology in the translation process:political ideology as is embedded in political idioms, slogans, concepts and texts of grand narrative style;cultural ideology as is embedded in place and personal names or things particular to China;personal ideology as is embedded in the author’s selection and arrangement of information, personal judgment on the protagonists and writing style.Different translation strategies are adopted to deal with those three kinds of ideology:In political ideology translation, the translator transforms generalized and abstract political concepts and expressions into specific and detailed ones, and removes them if they are incomprehensible or unacceptable to target readers; In cultural ideology translation, the translator excludes cultural barriers by omitting unimportant information, bringing important implications unto surface, replacing Chinese norms with universal ones, and explaining important concepts; In personal ideology translation, the translator reinterprets the author’s ideology by adding necessary information or removing those unnecessary, strengthening or weakening the in-text cohesion, changing the author’s judgment and unique writing style. This translation practice helps familiarize foreign readers with the life of Chinese scientist Nan Rendong and the construction process of "China’s Sky Eye" which Nan struggled and died for,and helps them better understand Chinese socialist and collectivist values. It also offers some experience for other C-E translation practices similar to this one.
