Chinese idioms contain profound cultural connotations. However,at present, the study of translation of Goldblatt’s idioms is mostly confined to the field of "translation strategies",and the study of translator’s translation behavior is rare. The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive and objective analysis of the translation of 1,274 idioms in Goldblatt’s translation work Big Breasts and Wide Hips from two different perspectives named "intra-translation" and"extra-translation" with the guidance of Professor Zhou Lingshun’s Translator Behavior Criticism theory, hoping to provide a new research angle for the translation of Goldblatt’s idioms and inspiring Chinese culture "going out".The study found that although Goldblatt had said the abuse of Chinese idioms is one of the reasons why Chinese novels cannot be improved,he still adopts various translation strategies to express the meaning of the original idioms as far as possible when translating the idioms in Big Breasts and Wide Hips. The main methods adopted above are literal translation(29.2%),free translation(48.2%),amplification and omission(7.9%)and the so-called "zero-translation"(14.7%).This paper studys materials from the perspectives of "intra-translation" and"extra-translation".From the perspective of "intra-translation",it examines the text type, grammar and language style, and finds that the translator retains as much as possible as the original author wants to express, and achieves "truth-seeking" as the basis to ensure the contextual effect of idiom translation. From the perspective of "extra-translation",it examines the aspects of market, the editors and publishers and the translator himself. It finds that the translator,as a social being, tends to be more "utility-attaining",that is to say,he pays more attention to the acceptance of the translated text without damaging the original intention, and achieves the principle of "utility-attaining".It is found that the translation behavior of Goldblatt generally conforms to the principle of "truth-seeking first, assisting with utility-attaining".This paper holds that the translation of Goldblatt’s idioms is a dynamic process. When evaluating its translation effect,we should consider mult:iple factors such as "intra-translation" and"extra-translation".The paper is divided into six chapters:Chapter One introduces the main soutline structure of the paper, including research background, significance, questions and structure of this paper;Chapter Two reviews the literature, introducing and categorizing the domestic and foreign research on the translation of Goldblatt,Chinese idioms and Goldblatt’s idioms translation;Chapter Three is the theoretical basis, introducing Professor Zhou Lingshun’s theory of Translator Behavior Criticism,"Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" Evaluative Model of Continuum, and research of "intra-translation" and "extra-translation".Chapters Four and Five are the main parts. This part analyzes the translation strategies Goldblatt adapted through examples and makes a comprehensive analysis of the translations and their translation behaviors from two different perspectives:intra-translation and extra-translation.Chapter six is the conclusion, including the main findings, limitations and implications for Future Research and translation practice.
