Teachers’ emotional intelligence is an ability that teachers can perceive and understand themselves and students’ emotions,to manage their own and students’ emotions in the process of communication,which makes teaching more effective and has a direct influence on the teaching efficiency.In class,teacher’s emotion is an important factor which affects the student’s classroom engagement.Teachers should be good at perceiving,understanding,expressing and managing their own and students’ emotions,using emotional intelligence theory to improve students’ classroom engagement and make teaching more effective.Therefore,from the perspective of the emotional intelligence theory and students’ classroom engagement,this paper studied the correlation between the emotional intelligence of 120 senior high school English teachers and the classroom engagement of 960 students from Qiannan minority area by means of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews.The research questions are:(1)What is the current situation of senior high school English teachers’ emotional intelligence in minority area?(2)What are the differences in teachers’ emotional intelligence at different gender,teaching experience and professional title?(3)What is the current situation of senior high school students’ classroom engagement and the difference in students’ SCE at different gender in minority area?(4)Is there any correlation between teachers’ emotional intelligence and students’ classroom engagement? If so,what is it?(5)What factors affect senior high school English teachers’ emotional intelligence in minority area?By using descriptive statistics,independent sample t-test,one-way ANOVA,correlation analysis,regression analysis and thematic analysis,the research results are summed up as follows:(1)The senior high school English teachers’ emotional intelligence in minority areas is at a high level,ranking from high to low is the ability to Emotion Use,Regulating Self Emotion,Emotion Perception,and the ability to Students’ Emotion Managements.(2)There are significant differences in emotional intelligence of senior high school English teachers in minority areas at different gender and teaching experience.The mean score of female teachers is higher than male teachers’.The longer the teaching experience,the higher score of emotional intelligence.And there is no significant difference in emotional intelligence among the teachers with different professional title.(3)The overall level of students’ classroom engagement is at a medium high level,from high to low in order is: Cognitive Engagement,Emotional Engagement,Behavioral Engagement.There is significant difference in students’ classroom engagement at different gender.The mean score of girls is higher than boys’.(4)There is a significant correlation between the teachers’ emotional intelligence and its each dimension with the students’ classroom engagement,and the ability of Regulating Self Emotion and the Students ’ Emotion Management have the highest explanation rate for students’ classroom engagement.(5)The factors that influence the teachers’ emotional intelligence include both internal and external factors,such as: student performance,the pressure of work and life,mindset,teaching experience,physical health,student feedback,correlations with colleagues,etc.Based on above results,this paper puts forward corresponding suggestions to improve teachers’ emotional intelligence to promote students’ classroom engagement: 1)Teachers should improve the ability to perceive emotion and manage students’ emotion;2)Teachers should improve the ability to use emotion and regulate self emotion;3)Teachers should pay more attention to improving students’ emotional intelligence;4)Administration department should improving teachers’ evaluation mechanism;5)Schools should offer relevant emotional intelligence course regularly;6)Schools should construct English teachers’ learning community.
