| Pangs of Love, written by American Chinese writer David Wong Louie, was first published in 1991,and it is the first short story collection by him. There are 11 stories in the collection which includes not only the American Chinese, but also some American characters whose identity is blurred. Many critics hold the view that the difference between this fiction and other American Chinese writers’ fictions is the reduction of the description of ethnicity;however, some parts prove that the ethnicity theme has not gone but shown in another way.In addition, this fiction also shows the unique identity of American Chinese.Meanwhile, the fiction demonstrates the other themes;for instance, the concern of the survival status of Americans, which is something easy to be ignored by other American Chinese authors. Moreover,David indeed has special writing skills like the openness of the ending and unreliable narration which need to be discussed. All in all,as an American Chinese male author whose writing skill and style is outstanding and unique, his novels should be known and researched more, and Pangs of Love is the most valuable one among his few fictions. The essay will be made up by three chapters which including the analysis from contents and structure. The first chapter illustrates the multiple themes in the fiction including ethnicity, beingness and gender, and the second part focuses on the analysis of Chinese Americans,Japanese Americans and Caucasians. The next chapter elaborates artistic features as well as strategy narrations and Confucius concepts.Three sections of his narrating strategies include open-ending,metafiction narration and non-narrative events, fragmentation and the description of natural scenes.Construction and deconstruction of the Confucianism in this collection are also analyzed. The last part concludes the essay briefly. |
