| As natural disasters occur frequently on earth, causing serious loss of life and property, countries have realized that effective disaster risk management has become a top priority. This report selects Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of Natural Disaster Risk Management: Geosciences and Social Responsibility of Professor Ulrich Ranke as the translation material. These chapters introduces reasons and risks of disasters and approaches to deal with disasters. As the scientific style of text is featured professional terms, nominal phrases, etc, the most frequent problem in this translation practice is the translation of collocations. Therefore, this report chooses to focus on the translation of collocations. The report explores the translation process under the guidance of Firth’s Linguistics. This report is divided into four parts.Firstly, the report introduces the author’s background, sketch of the book, the textual features of the translated text,as well as the significance of the report. Then,it introduces the translator’s translation process description, including translation preparation, which are translation tools, glossary establishment, time schedule, and post-translation proofreading. The next part is the case analysis, which is the essence of the report.Under the guidance of Firth’s syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations, the translator analyzes the translation of collocations from intra-textual context,i.e.S&P relations, and extra-textual context. After the case analysis, the author conducts the translation evaluation based on Halliday’s “Choice is meaning” and Lian Shuneng’s EC contrastive studies with combination of specific translation cases. The last part is conclusion of the translation practice, including the findings of collocation translation, which is how to apply collocation theory into collocation translation, and to consider collocation translationfrom the angle of context. The report aims at providing possible reference for Chinese translators in their translation practice of pragmatic texts as well as up-to-date information for research in the field of natural disaster risk management. |
