This report intends to study how the author finishes her translation of the book Organic Tea Production and Management under the guidance of Li Zhanxi’s Relevance-Adjustability Theoretic Approach(RATA,hereafter)in the process of preparing, translating and assessing. And the two mental processes of Discourse-Interpreting Communicative Process(DICP,hereafter)and Discourse-Producing Communicative Process(DPCP,hereafter)are mainly analysed. After more than two decades of development, organic tea industry has become an important part of organic agriculture and tea industry and more articles and books about it have been published in Chinese. However, many of these articles and books have not been translated into English. The book Organic Tea Production and Management is one of such books.China is a major tea producer, and it is now initiating “go global” of Chinese Culture.Hence, the author thinks it necessary to make China’s achievement on organic tea production and management known to the world through translation. This book, written by experts of China Organic Agriculture Committee of Green Food Association, introduces the definition of organic tea,tea base construction, tea garden soil management, fertilizer application, pests and weeds prevention and control as well as many other aspects of organic tea, bearing great value for translation.Reading it for several times, the author decides to take the first two chapters of this book as the source text to translate for this translation report. This report explores how the author finishes her translation.First of all, after reading the source text and parallel texts, she prepares necessary translation tools, including a variety of dictionaries, online translation software and computer-aided translation tools, for example,Trados 5.0.Thanks to these efforts, she establishes a detailed glossary for later translation and research.Next, she reviews researches concerning the source text and concludes findings of these researches so that she can acquire a better understanding of it.Finally, the author attempts to translate the source text better under the guidance of RATA.Based on Relevance Theory(Sperber & Wilson 1986)and Adaptation Theory(Versuchueren 1999),Li Zhanxi cultivates the Relevance-adjustability Theoretic Approach to the translating process(2007),which considers translating as a relevance-seeking,ostensive-inferential process in the source cognitive environment and a dynamically-adjusting process in the target cognitive environment. With her translating experience, the author believes that only by taking translation as a cross-cultural communication process, mastering linguistic and encyclopedia knowledge and balancing cognitive differences can she demonstrate her subjectivity to translate well.In this report, the author studies how to apply this approach to sentence translation, discusses difficulties she encountered and the corresponding translation strategies, translator’s subjectivity and translation principles in the course of producing the target text. With a summary of findings and difficulties as well as the corresponding solutions to those difficulties, the author realizes her shortcomings in this translation task and thus improves her language skills and the ability to research.
