Bi-Ji(笔记),one literary form of the literature of Song Dynasty,had been ignored for a long time,on account of traditional concept that it is an informal style of literature.Modern scholars tend to regard it as the supplementary source which need to be used with traditional documentary sources,material objects and oral historical materials to explain history.However,if researchers look at them as the anthology of many solitary Bi-Ji,they will become the research object of literature field in Song Dynasty.As the result of three different reasons which are the Imperial Competitive Examination drive cultural undertakings grow rapidly,the official and private historiography in Song dynasty is flourishing,and the increasing number of the writers.Bi-Ji had been an independent literature style in Earlier Song Dynasty(9601127).At the beginning of the Empire,theme of Bi-Ji is just about the history ofSouthern Tang Dynasty.These private Bi-Ji fight against the official history,showed their courage and heroic spirit.OUYANG-Xiu,the leader of the literary world in the era of the Emperor Renzong and Yingzong of the Song Dynasty,also started to write Bi-Ji.Thanks to him,Bi-Ji,were respected by the first-class writers gradually.People followed thepath that OUYANG-Xiu had walked.The number of Bi-Ji had becoming much more than before,and the theme increased as well.In this case,the spread of Bi-Ji is in a wide range.In the Middle and Late Northern Song Dynasty,Bi-Ji usually spread bymanuscripts,handwritten and printed copies.Handwritten copies might be the mostpopular.Even so,readers still can read many Bi-Ji and respond to writers.The literati and officialdom(in feudal China)even use Bi-Ji as tools to construct the so calleddomestic disciplines made by our forefathers.There are more than 100 Bi-Ji ofEarlier Song Dynasty(960-1127)still hand down now.The most obvious artisticcharacteristics of them,to my opinion,is Bi-Ji usually conditioned by similarcategories,shaped a vivid description of many distinctive characters,and use straightaway written language.In brief,Bi-Ji as a literature style,had been generated and developed in Earlier Song Dynasty(960-1127).It is an important part of Song Literature.Researchersshould pay attention to Bi-Ji,especially under the circumstance that the study hadbeen excessive of Poems,Ci(词)and Essays of Song Dynasty.The Song Literaturewould be a rounded system only if Bi-Ji had been involved.
