| This paper selects some translations from Xu Yuanchong and Ezra Pound, two representative translators both at home and abroad, and makes a contrastive study on the translation strategies of culture images in their translations of classical Chinese poetry from the perspective of Relevance Theory. The images mentioned in this paper are categorized into names of ancient people, place names, allusions, and other images. This paper aims at finding out the most proper translation strategies of the images in the classical Chinese poetry which could offer the optimal relevance to the target readers, thus,to help target readers to have a better understanding of the meaning of culture images and the sense of the classical Chinese poetry which will help classical Chinese poetry become universal. In the light of what have been studied in this paper, from perspective of the Relevance Theory, the author draws the conclusion that:as for the translation strategies of images of ancient people’ name in the classical Chinese poetry,to apply transliteration and add notes can offer the optimal relevance to the target readers, besides in this way it can also keep the original meaning of the original text.As for the translation strategies of images of ancient places’ name in the classical Chinese poetry,to paraphrase can offer the optimal relevance to the target readers;other ways are applying transliteration or literal translation and add notes. As for the translation strategies of images of allusions in the classical Chinese poetry,to paraphrase can offer the optimal relevance to the target readers;besides transliteration and add notes is another way of translating allusions. As for the translation strategies of other images which are symbolic in the classical Chinese poetry, using equivalents is the best way to offer the optimal relevance to the target readers. If the equivalents are unavailable, using synonyms to replace, simultaneously, adding notes may be a better choice.Last but not least, adapting omission while translating the images fails to offer the optimal relevance to the target readers, thus, will be helpless for the readers to understand the meaning of the original poetry. |
