| The Golden Notebook is well-known as the masterpiece of Doris Lessing, the British contemporary woman writer. This novel lays the foundation of Doris Lessing’s fame in the realm of western literature. This grand work has a unique form and abundant content. However, there are few academic studies on the different translation versions of The Golden Notebook in China. So this thesis aims to compare the impact of two translators’ subjectivity by comparing the two Chinese translation versions of The Golden Notebook:one is co-translated by Professor Chen Caiyu and Professor Liu Xinming published in 2000 in mainland, the other is translated by Professor Cheng Huiqin in 1998 in Taiwan. This thesis aims to extend the research perspectives of The Golden Notebook. This thesis makes the comparison at the levels of the translators’ comprehension and expression, translation strategies.Besides, the restricted factors of translators’subjectivity are analyzed from social ideology, culture and translator’s fundamental qualities.Based on a thorough study of the original work and a comparative analysis of the two translations, this thesis concludes that:first, owning to translators’ subjective initiative, the two translators interpret relationship among characters in this novel differently. However, neither of them exactly shows the beauty in sound, form and sense when it comes to rhymes.Second, the two translators’ different strategies on how to translate phrases, mythological allusions and puns do show their translators’subjectivity.Last but not least, freedom to pursue translators’ subjectivity is not totally unrestricted. It is influenced by social ideology and culture in target language, translator’s fundamental qualities and so on.There are many mistranslations on names, places, time and figures in both translations. So the Golden Notebook still has a necessity of retranslation. |
