The Translation Of The Garlic Ballads From The Perspective Of Manipulation Theory

In 2012,Mo Yan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature,which has brought about enormous attention and interest of scholars and researchers.His novels of "Red Sorghum" and "Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out" have drawn much attention,while"The Garlic Ballads",a top selling novel in overseas market,is ignored by the public.Mo Yan’s success in Nobel Prize is inseparable from translator’s contribution in publicizing his novels in overseas market.Howard Goldblatt,as the translator of his novels’ English-version,is one of the prominent contributors.Based on Lefevere’s Manipulation theory,this paper analyzes the difference between "The Garlic Ballads"Chinese version and its English one and reveals how the three main elements including ideology,poetics and patronage exert rewriting effect on the translation of the novel,especially in terms of style,diction,sentence structure and discourse structure.By comparing and analyzing many an example,this paper clarifies that there is abundant rewriting in the novel despite the fact that the English version is basically faithful to the original one.In conclusion,translators always,consciously or unconsciously,take the three elements of manipulation theory into account and rewrite the original version during the translation process.Through tentative study,this paper hopes to attract more focus and interest to this novel and its English version and provide a reference for future study with related subject or theory.
