ObjectiveThis study aimed to characterize the frequency and severity of sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome(SAHS)in Chinese patients with acute cerebral infarction(ACI)and to identify clinical data related to SAHS.MethodsThe study enrolled Chinese patients with ACI.Patients were monitored using the home sleep apnea test and their baseline data and scales were collected. The prevalence of SAHS was identified.According to the apnea/hypopnea index, patients were divided into four groups. The above clinical characteristics were compared between groups. The area under the curve was used to predict SAHS.The effects on SAHS were analyzed using binary logistic regression.ResultsAmong 183 subjects, the prevalence of SAHS was 78.1%.In the scores of the Diagnostic Scale of TCM Syndrome Types of Ischemic Stroke among the groups, only the internal fire item was statistically different(P < 0.05).There was no significant difference in National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale,Mini-Mental State Examination,Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and Stanford Sleepiness Scale scores between groups. In sub-entries of the STOP-Bang Questionnaire, item 1(Snoring)and item 3(Apnea observed)were significantly different among the four groups(P < 0.05).Binary logistic regression suggested that snoring and ESS were correlated with SAHS(P < 0.05).ConclusionThe prevalence of SAHS in Chinese patients with ACI is high.Mild symptoms are common, while the incidence of obesity is low.The more severe the SAHS of the patient, the higher the score of internal fire syndrome. There was no significant correlation between SAHS and the degree of neurological deficit and cognitive impairment, indicating that SAHS may not be caused by acute neurological deficit in cerebral infarction.Snoring, apnea, and drowsiness are associated with SAHS.
