Background and aims: This study aims to explore the influence of alcohol consumption on the progression of chronic hepatitis B to cirrhosis, and explore how alcohol interacts with hepatitis B virus to affect the progression of cirrhosis. Methods: Ninety patients who referred to Chongqing Medical University first affiliated hospital were selected and divided into three groups: non-drinking group, moderate drinking group and excessive drinking group. These indicators of fibrosis(HA,LN,PIIINP and CIV),HBV-DNA load, transaminase, the number of of patients in Child-Pugh scoring system rating in each group, the number of complications in each group and hepatitis B s antigen(HBs Ag)were tested at three phases,being0,3,6 months after they quit drinking and with further medical treatment.Result: In total, ninety cases(74 males,16 females)with hepatitis B cirrhosis were enrolled. We found that all indicators of fibrosis,HBV-DNA loads,AST,ALT in excessive drinking group, are highest among the other two groups at any time(P<0.05).And there are nearly no differences between moderate drinking group and non-drinking group in those fields at the stage of 0,3,6 month after quit drinking and treatment(P>0.05).the number of patients with excessive drinking in Child-Pugh C class is the most among three groups(P<0.001).The number of patients with non-drinking in non-complications is the most among three groups at the0,3,6 month(P<0.001).We also found that there is no difference among three groups in hepatitis B s antigen(HBs Ag)at any time(P>0.05).Conclusion: Patients who have CHB and excessive drinking habit, would activate HBV-DNA,and therefore increase the liver inflammation. After stopping drinking, although serum indicators have decreased compared to before. However, the number of child C patients with excessive drinking has not significantly decreased,so excessive drinking may promote the progression of chronic hepatitis B to cirrhosis.Whereas moderate drinking group shows insignificant statistical differences on the progress of liver cirrhosis.
