| Objective:To study the relationship between morphology of oropharyngeal airway and the maxilla and mandible in adolescents with average angle. Methods:Full field maxillofacial CBCT of 90 average angle adolescent orthodontic patients aged 12-15 years were selected and divided into three groups according to ANB angle:skeletal class I,skeletal class II,and skeletal class III,30 in each group. We compared the oropharyngeal airway morphology among the three groups and analyzed the correlation between maxilla and mandibule and the morphology of oropharyngeal airway.Results:1.Morphological differences of oropharyngeal airway among the three groups were not significant(P>0.05)in the skeletal class I group(17817.58±9122.52 mm~3),skeletal class II Group(14726.95±7588.61 mm~3),and skeletal class III group(15743.01±8807.74 mm~3),include volume of oropharyngeal airway.2.The width of the maxilla was positively correlated with the volume of the oropharyngeal airway(P<0.05).3.Each length of the mandible was positively correlated with the oropharyngeal airway volume(P<0.05).the width of the mandible and the distance of the mandible from the airway(D3 and D6)were positively correlated with the oropharyngeal airway volume(P<0.05).4.ANB angle were negatively correlated with the minimum cross-sectional area of the oropharyngeal airway(P<0.05).5.Other morphometric measures of the oropharyngeal airway, such as sagittal cross-sectional area, sagittal diameter, and cross-sectional area, were correlated with multiple measurements of the maxilla and mandible(P<0.05).Conclusion:1.The mean values of the oropharyngeal airway volume and cross-sectional area of the average-angle juvenile skeletal class II group are lower than those of the skeletal class I and III groups, but there was no statistical difference.2.The volume of the oropharyngeal airway decreases as the width of the maxilla decreases. The volume of the oropharyngeal airway decreases as the length and width of the mandible decrease. The volume of the oropharyngeal airway decreases as the distance of the mandible from the airway(D3,D6)decreases.3.The minimum cross-sectional area of the oropharyngeal airway decreases as the ANB angle increase.4.The sagittal cross-sectional area, sagittal and transverse diameters of the oropharyngeal airway will also be affected by the morphology of the maxilla and mandible and the distance between the maxilla and mandible and the airway. |
