In recent years, along with the rapid development of the national economy, people’s living standards are improving. However, our country is facing an increasing problem of an ageing population. As an essential part of an aging society, the health problems of middle-aged and older people will have a considerable impact on society, while they are gradually becoming more concerned about their well-being as they get older, advances in technology have made it possible for older people to access information in more diverse ways such as We Chat and short video platforms,The urgent need for health information and the tendency of the middle-aged and older population to trust widely disseminated information makes the impact of these health messages on this group even more significant.Research on exposure to conflict health messages is an vital aspect of health communication for middle-aged and older people and the study of their behavioral intentions is also of crucial relevance in this context. The study explored the impact of conflicting health messages on the health behavioral intentions of middle-aged and older adults, primarily using ambiguity aversion theory,heuristic-systematic model, and carryover effect as the theoretical basis, proposing hypotheses and constructing the underlying theoretical derivation model.Using questionnaire survey method to collect data,Including adults over 50 years of age as study participants, containing a total of 377 valid questionnaires, then using AMOS(24.0)and SPSS(18.0)to construct a structural equation model to validate and analyze the accurate sample data to investigate the influence of conflicting health messages on the health behavioral intentions of the middle-aged and older adults. There is evidence that media exposure had a significant effect on perceived ambiguity, heuristic processing had a significant positive effect on message resistance, and systematic processing had a significant adverse effect on message resistance, which in turn may lead people to doubt nutrition and health recommendations more generally—including those that are not rife with conflict information(e.g.,fruit and vegetable consumption, exercise). With this in mind, the recommendations and responses for future research are discussed. |
