Hydrogen is regarded as the most potential clean energy in the 21 st century.As one of the hydrogen sources,coal to hydrogen has attracted wide attention due to its wide range of sources and low cost.Although hydrogen greatly reduces greenhouse gas emissions when it is used in the terminal,the production of hydrogen from coal will consume a lot of energy and produce greenhouse gas emissions,so it is of great significance to study its low carbon property from the life cycle process.Carbon footprint is an objective method to estimate life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions of a product or technology.In this paper,the life cycle carbon footprint of hydrogen production from coal gasification and coal pyrolysis are evaluated.The carbon emission of hydrogen from coal includes direct emission and indirect emission.Therefore,according to the PAS 2050,based on the process analysis and input-output model,this paper establishes the life cycle carbon footprint assessment model of hydrogen production from coal.Then,relevant data are collected to calculate the carbon footprint of hydrogen production via coal gasification and coal pyrolysis during the life-cycle stages from coal mining to hydrogen transportation.Finally,sensitivity analysis,carbon emission analysis of coal to hydrogen industry and low-carbon production analysis are carried out according to the carbon footprint calculation results.From the perspective of life cycle,hydrogen from coal has a high carbon emissions,the highest carbon emissions in the life cycle is hydrogen preparation process,indirect carbon emissions are mainly caused by power consumption.In general,compared with coal pyrolysis,coal gasification has higher carbon emission,and the carbon emission of compressed liquid hydrogen is larger than that of gas hydrogen.China’s coal to hydrogen industry has a large scale.With CCS technology,coal to hydrogen can become the main source of hydrogen supply.we should vigorously promote the coupling process of coal based hydrogen production,wind power,photovoltaic power generation and other renewable energy generation to reduce indirect carbon emissions.
