Because of the oceanic unique natural geographical conditions, the island settlements show different mainland styles and features.Development imperatives under rapidly changing conditions need to protect the peculiarities of island settlements. Therefore, this article focuses on the spatial structure of settlements and island folk beliefs.Take the Shengsi Archipelago in Zhejiang Province to study the morphological characteristics and evolution of sea island settlements in Zhejiang Province.First, through the quantitative analysis of settlement boundary pattern index, the study found that the early settlement appears cluster shape to defend or allocate public resources.Due to unbalanced elements influence, the settlements’ boundary gradually evolved into a band or finger shape. They were finally stabilized in a band or finger shape by the constrained by the islands and mountains.Artificial reclamation and other activities help settlements enlarge from a belt or finger shape to a cluster shape again in the available space.Secondly, using SPSS and statistical knowledge to study the spatial structure characteristics of island settlements quantitatively. The study of the building density of21 settlements in Shengsi Archipelago found that the agglomeration degree and building layout of the settlements are not the same as the existing mainland regions. The feature research of mainland does not apply to island settlements. Therefore, the research on the degree of distribution of island settlement buildings is carried out in combination with examples.Calculate the distance relationship between the temple as a special building and the settlement’s environmental elements, obtain the characteristics of the temple as the border of the island settlement and remain unchanged for a long time. The result of correlation analysis of each element’s distance shows that the distance from the settlement boundary(temples outside)is positively correlated with the distance from the coast;the distance from the settlement boundary(temples inside)is positively correlated with the distance to the water. The study finally found that the island’s temples’ location is often located at the border of the settlement, reflecting the role of local identity represented by ocean religious belief in maintaining the settlement’s unique shape.Based on this, the distance constraint formula is constructed as a basis for continuing the uniqueness of island settlements.
