Abstract/Summary:
A minimal surface is a surface with the smallest area under a certain constraint. It is a non-euclidean geometric surface that breaks the limit of traditional orthogonal system, whose average curvature is 0.The minimal surface has a long history and fruitful achievements in the field of mathematics. In recent years, with the development of minimal surface in the field of computer graphics,it has been more and more applied in other disciplines.Minimal surface has stable structure, flowing and continuous space, and it is highly modular and reproducible, which makes it have a very broad application prospect in the field of architecture. In this paper, through studying the geometric characteristics of minimal surfaces and the existing generation methods, two generation and deformation methods of minimal surfaces based on Rhino and Grasshopper platforms, which are convenient for architects to use,are explored. These two methods are implicit function method and patch optimization method. From two different perspectives, two architectural schemes based on the spatial prototype of Costa minimal surface configuration are designed to further illustrate how to organize and design architectural space by taking minimal surface configuration as an effective structural system and innovative spatial element.
