Research On Historical Materials About “National Landscaping And Gardening Movement”

During the high-tide of the Great Leap Forward Campaign,influenced by the People’s Commune Movement,“National Landscaping and Gardening Movement” was proposed to improve environment in December 1958.The movement led a period of leap in the development of landscaping and Gardening,and realized the rapid development in the cause of landscaping during Early Period of the People’s Republic of China.Combined with the historical background and the development path of China’s modern gardens,various historical materials about “National Landscaping and Gardening Movement” are combed through,to review its creators and practices that have occurred under the influence and assess the role and significance of the movement in the historical trend.And then,from social cognition and practical exploration two aspects,it restores the connotation and profile of this movement,analyzes and interprets the evolution in the new era,to provide the historical experience and practical guidance for the development of modern landscape architecture.After researching these historical materials,the article finds that “National Landscaping and Gardening Movement” is a perfect combination of the state’s great attention and the spontaneous action of the whole people.On the one hand,under the call of “National Landscaping and Gardening Movement”,all Chinese,including political leaders,experts and scholars and the general public,contributed to this national greening movement,as a “national mobilization”.On the other hand,whatever a city or a village,it should be planted extensively in open spaces to realize the greening,beautification and landscaping,as a “whole greening”.However,limited by the background of the times,this movement as an ideal greening vision has not been realized.After the reform and opening up of China in late 1970 s,with the vigorous support of policies and economy,and the more mature ideology as autonomy,obligation,system,and so on,“National Landscaping and Gardening Movement” has gained new vitality interpreted and managed in the comprehensive and systematic development of modern landscape architecture.
