| The brain is one of the most complex and crucial organs of our body.During the whole lifetime,it helps an individual to make sense of the whole world and understand the complex processes of nature. Its health is a matter of concern for all individuals as a healthy brain is the basic need of a healthy life.Brain aging is considered as one of the most important issues in the modern era as the proportion of aged people is increasing gradually in the world.Pursuant to the United Nations World Population survey(conducted in 2015),it is predicted that the ratio of the aged people will almost get doubled from 12%to 22%in 2050.Hence,there is an imminent need to unmask the anti-aging properties of natural phytochemicals,so that the quality of life can be made better. To solve this issue, animal models are used as valuable tools for studying the complex biological mechanism of aging and for determining the treatment potential of a particular therapeutic compound. Moreover,it is well known that fruits and vegetables are essential components of a balanced diet.Their regular consumption lowers the risk of many health ailments including heart diseases and cancers which are ranked as the two major causes of the world’s mortality.Since ancient time, researchers have been working to find out the beneficial effects of their secondary metabolites.Carica papaya is one of such miraculous gifts of nature.Traditionally,it has been used as an important constituent in folk medicine and with the passage of time more of its health benefits have been unveiled. It is well documented that it can protect neurons from different neurodegenerative diseases, however, its brain anti-aging effects are unknown.Keeping in view all these factors,in this dissertation, the brain anti-aging potential of C.papaya pulp and seeds have been investigated by studying different neurobehavioural, neurochemical and histopathological alterations.Besides, the brain anti-aging strength of C papaya pulp and.seeds has been compared. The experim ental rats were distributed into five groups, the negative control(group 1),D-galactose induced group(group 2),the positive control(group 3),D-galactose along with papaya pulp extract-treated group(group 4)and Dgalactose along with papaya seed extract-treated group(group 5).After 8 weeks of induction, neurobehavioural, neurochemical and histopathological analyses were conducted along with determining the antioxidant levels. The results indicated that both pulp and seeds of C.papaya possess the potential to inhibit the brain aging effects of D-galactose by improving cognitive learning skills, memory, muscular strength, locomotor behaviour and reducing stress and anxiety level, enhancing neurotransmitters concentration and reducing oxidative stress. However, the anti-aging effects of C.papaya pulp were more significant than seeds. Therefore,Carica papaya pulp can be utilized to design a potential novel brain anti-aging drug. |
