Foreign direct investment plays an important role in China’s economic growth, not only in its financial aspects, but also in its introduction of advanced technology and management concepts. However, while foreign-funded enterprises are driving China’s rapid economic growth, they also consume China’s resources and have an important impact on the environment. In order to ensure the sustainable development of China’s economy, the government has introduced a series of environmental laws and regulations, continuously improving the intensity of environmental regulation and increasing pollution control, which has played a certain role in China’s introduction of foreign investment and environmental pollution. In view of this,it is very necessary to thoroughly study the impact of foreign direct investment on environmental pollution in China under environmental regulations.Through the combing of related literatures, the main viewpoints of scholars are summarized and the current situation of foreign direct investment, environmental pollution and environmental regulation is analyzed.Based on the theory of trade environment effect and the theory of factor endowment, the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2006 to 2015 were selected, and the panel threshold model was used to study the impact of foreign direct investment on environmental pollution by using environmental regulations as a threshold.Direct investment has a significant threshold effect on environmental pollution. The research results show that there is a nonlinear relationship between foreign direct investment and environmental pollution. With the improvement of the level of environmental regulation, foreign direct investment plays a role in suppressing and promoting environmental pollution, that is,the "V" type evolution law exists between the two.Based on the empirical results, from the perspective of regional heterogeneity,it is found that although the provinces in the eastern region have improved the level of environmental regulation, they have not been able to alleviate the situation of environmental pollution, and the effect of technology spillovers brought about by foreign direct investment has weakened.
