Polyvinyl chloride(PVC)is extensively used in the manufacturing of medical devices, including indwelling catheters, tracheal intubation, filter film, and blood storage bag. However, the bacterial infections associated with implantable or indwelling catheters, which often cause severe morbidities or even death, are threatening the public health. To tackle this daunting situation, antibacterial medical PVC materials are in urgent demand.Bio-based polyester elastomers(BPE)are ammonolyzed and quaternized to produce bio-based antibacterial plasticizers(QBED)for manufacturing of antibacterial medical PVC.The QBED is mixed with diisononyl cyclohexane1,2-dicarboxylate(DINCH),and blended with PVC resin. After being processed using a two-roll mill, the modified PVC shows excellent antibacterial potency, while the mechanical properties are almost unimpaired. Moreover, the modified PVC strongly repels adhesion of live and dead bacteria, and inhibits the formation of biofilms on surface. These results, when combined, shows that the QBED modified PVC may find important applications in the manufacturing of antibacterial medical devices.Although the bio-based antibacterial plasticizers are promising, the production of QBED is tedious and time-consuming.To address this issue,we successfully synthesized a quaternary compound, namely QDED,as an antibacterial additive that blended with pristine PVC resin in the next research. The QDED modified PVC also shows improved hydrophilicity and enhanced antibacterial potency without impairing the mechanical properties. In addition, the hemolysis and cytotoxicity results show good biocompatibility of the QDED modified PVC.To reduce the usage of the reagent and solve the problem of the change in the color,we develope an antibacterial coating. The PVC plates are simply incubated in an aqueous solution containing catechol(CA),3aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES),and QDED to fabricate an antibacterial coating via Schiff base reaction and Michael addition. The resultant coating significantly imporves the hydrophilicity, and reduces the adhesion of bacteria on surface. In summary,a series of antibacterial medical PVC materials are developed in this thesis. In order to meet the requirements for the manufacturing of medical devices, the mechanical properties, hydrophilic properties, antibacterial properties, and biocompatibility of modified PVC are comprehensively studied. The results in this thesis may shed light on the development of next-generation PVC materials to reduce hospital-acquired bacterial infection.
