Although poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC)has been widely used as blood-contacting materials in extracorporeal circuits and indwelling medical devices,its hydrophobicity also is a limitation due to the adsorption of plasma proteins and the immediately followed thrombosis cascade and bacterial infections.In this paper,we developed a mild and simple strategy for improving the hydrophilicity and antifouling properties of the surface by coating hydrophilic polymers via mussel-inspired chemistry.Different amounts of 1,3-Propanesultone(1,3-PS)were attached onto the polyethyleneimine(PEI),so as to modify it into the zwitterion,called PESX.Three layer-by-layer approaches about PESX grafting on PVC substrates were studied:i)coating polydopamine(PDA)on PVC substrates,then coating PEI and 1,3-PS in sequence to obtain PDA-PEI-PS coatings;ii)coating PESX after coating polydopamine(PDA)on PVC surface,obtaining PDA-PESX coatings;iii)co-deposition treatment by coating PES after co-deposing PDA/PESX on PVC surface,obtaining PDA/PESX-PESXcoatings.The study results indicated that when the initial molar feed ratio of 1,3-PS and the amine groups on PEI-600 was chosen as 0.5 to synthesize zwitterionic polymer PES0.5(PEI-600),and the coating process of Scheme iii was selected to bind PES0.5(PEI-600)to the substrate,the obtained PDA/PES0.5-PES0.5 hydrophilic coating had the best antifouling properties that presented about 2.5-3 times reduction in BSA adsorption(0.77?g/cm2)compared with PDA/PES0.5(1.93?g/cm2)and PDA-PES0.5(2.26?g/cm2).Moreover,the more excellent antifouling performance of PDA/PES0.5-PES0.5were also seen on fibrinogen(Fg),?-globulin(?-GL),and the mixture of these proteins as well as E.coli and S.aureus,and kept long time antifouling stability.Meanwhile,PDA/PES0.5-PES0.5 could effectively reduce platelet adhesion,slow blood clotting time,without hemolysis,non-toxic to 3T3-L1.Therefore,it has good hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility.We had hopes that our simple and mild strategy will find practical application in surface engineering of clinical use in blood-contacting medical devices.
