Cotton fabric is widely used in daily life, but its shortcomings such as bacterial attacking proneness, flammability, and poor UV resistance, limited further applications. Therefore,it is urgently required to modify cotton fabrics to improve the deficiencies. The exiting finishing chemicals can impart cotton fabric with functions like antibacterial effect,anti-flaming property or UV protection capability, but, such finishing reagents need specific and complex processes, and one reagent usually can only provide one function. These problems have become technical obstacles in the textile finishing industry, hindering the development of functional textile fabrics. To simplify the finishing process and expand the scope of functional finishing reagents during the Pad-Dry-Cure finishing process,we propose here a novel method, which constructs polyacrylic acid(PAA)adsorption coating on cotton fiber surfaces, following with a simple adsorption process to prepare functional textiles. The enhancing effect by the PAA coating grafted on the cotton fiber surfaces is investigated, and the feasibility in practical applications is demonstrated. The first work of this thesis investigates the preparation method of a hydrophobic coating on cotton fibers by grafting PAA and hexadecanol onto cotton fibers, and the application way of the hydrophobic coating to impart cotton fabric with additional functions such as antibacterial effect,anti-flaming property and UV resistance.PAA is first grafted onto the fiber surfaces via an esterification reaction, hexadecanol is further reacted with the residual carboxyl groups of the grafted PAA chains to obtain the hydrophobic cotton fabric(H-P-Co)with a hydrophobic coating on the fiber surfaces. To evaluate the enhancing effect of the hydrophobic coating on adsorption of functional finishing reagents,we treate the H-P-Co and original cotton fabric(O-Co)using amphiphilic antibacterial finishing agent,oil-soluble flame retardant or oil-soluble antiUV agent through Pad-Dry-Cure process, compared their function effect, and cleared the applicability and versatility of the hydrophobic coating for fabric functional finishing. The results show that all the three functions of H-P-Co are significantly better than that of O-Co,indicating that the hydrophobic coating can effectively improve the adsorption effect of cotton fabric.Cytotoxicity experiments further show that the H-PCo extract is not toxic on NIH/3T3 cells when compared to the O-Co extract. The comfort parameters such as softness, permeability and water absorption ability shows no significant difference before and after the modification treatment. Therefore,as a result, the hydrophobic coating constructed on the fiber surfaces can simplify the functional finishing process, expanding the scope of usable finishing agents, revealing remarkable innovation. In the second work,a cationic adsorption coating is constructed on the surfaces of cotton fibers by grafting PAA and L-arginine methyl ester dihydrochloride(H-ArgOme),to explore the feasibility to achieve antibacterial function by adsorbing anionic daily detergent components,PAA and H-Arg-Ome are firstly grafted on the surface of cotton by one-step reaction to obtain the modified cotton xA-P-Co with cationic surface. An aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS)is used to simulate washing-drying treatment of the cotton fabric, the antibacterial properties of xA-P-Co and O-Co after adsorbing the anionic surfactants are compared to evaluate the adsorption effect for the anionic compound. The results show that the coating could make the cotton fabric adsorb more SDBS molecules, and the antibacterial effect against S.aureus elevates with increasing dosage of H-Arg-Ome.As a conclusion based on the results above,by esterification or amidation of a PAA coating grafted on fiber surfaces, adsorption coatings can be readily constructed. They could effectively improve the adsorption capability of the cotton fabric for a variety of functional finishing reagents, and the coating on fiber can endow cotton fabric with efficient functions through a simple adsorption treatment. The present methodology can effectively expand the optional range of functional finishing reagents during Pad-DryCure process and simplify the finishing process that the reagents need.It has great application value in cotton fabric finishing process, and provides a new idea for finishing technology of textile industry.
