Abstract/Summary:
Traditional remote sensing platforms have some inevitable defects in data acquisition,such as observing frequency,high cost and susceptibility to environment,which have been the main limitation for flood monitoring.However,current popularization of passenger aircraft makes it a new remote sensing platform with high revisit and low cost.This article studies passenger aircraft as a remote sensing platform,tests whether the ground images obtained by passengers’ hand-hold consumer-grade equipment can meet the needs of flood disaster monitoring,and to complete or replace traditional remote sensing platform in disaster response.Based on theory of SFM in 3D reconstruction,this article summarizes and analyzes the characteristics of data captured from volunteered passenger aircraft remote sensing(VPARS),combines with Google Earth software,and studies the data processing methods of VPARS.By comparing with other remote sensing data,both data accuracy and response speed of VPARS in flood detection can be evaluated.The main research contents of this article are as follows:(1)This article collects and summarizes literatures the other materials about applications or cases on disaster monitoring with using traditional remote sensing method,analyzes the devices and methods used in data acquisition of VPARS,and estimates whether VPARS has potential for flood monitoring.(2)As a new remote sensing data source,both characteristics of VPARS’s data and its interference of fog and cloud are different from traditional remote sensing data.Therefore,a pre-processing method should be concluded to obtain camera initial positions and improve image quality.(3)Based on VPARS data,Photo Scan software is used as operation platform to finish the SFM algorithm,then a 3D dense cloud point and an orthomosaic image can be generated.By overlapping the orthomosaic image on Google Earth to complete the image interpretation,the result of flooded area can be obtained.In order to classify different flooded surfaces and calculate the exact area of each surface,FROM-GLC 10 is used in this study to improve the data accuracy.To evaluate the data timeliness and data accuracy of VPARS,the result in this case is used to compared with satellite data from Planet Company and Sentinel-1.After comparison,both timeliness and data curacy of VPARS are satisfied,and prove VPARS is qualified for flood disaster monitoring.(4)This article concludes that,due to its high revisit rate and dense coverage,passenger aircraft can be a great partner of volunteered remote sensing,the combination of them can minimize the cost of remote sensing in data acquisition,and enable ordinary passengers to capture images for disaster response with their smartphones or digital cameras.And because of the advantages of flying height,multi-angle oblique images synthesis can easily generate a cloud-free image.All these advantages make VPARS supply the weaknesses of traditional remote sensing platforms and provide data support for disaster monitoring.
