Terahertz waves have attracted considerable research interest in recent years because of their potential applications in diverse fields. However, due to the lack of gain media and materials with the required parameters, devices working in the terahertz band are relatively scarce. The existence of metamaterials effectively alleviates these problems. In order to make a better design of the functions of devices and realize realtime control, the concept of coding metamaterials is introducedIn this paper, relevant theories of coding metamaterials are applied to terahertz waves to complete the design of several terahertz devices including:1.A new beam splitter is designed only by 1-bit coding elements which can not only increase the angular degrees of freedom for beam splitting, but also increase the number of beam splitting. These new coding schemes can also change the position of the beams.2.A terahertz beam deflection controller is designed which can both change the direction of the deflection and be used as a beam splitter. The switching of these two different functions is based on the heat-induced phase change of vanadium dioxide.3.By the same principle,a terahertz vortex beam modulator is designed. The topological charge can be changed by temperature control.Through the design of these three terahertz devices, the advantages of coding metamaterials to facilitate the design of multifunctional devices and realize real-time control are well applied in the terahertz band, and provide more possibilities for flexible control of terahertz waves and better design of terahertz devices.
