The statistical information on the map are generally represented by two symbolization methods: graphic symbol grading and color grading,to express the quantitative characteristics.Graphic symbol grading usually adopts the size grading of dot symbol,and color grading usually adopts the brightness and saturation grading of polygon symbol color.In the design process,the minimum symbol size or color value of the first level,and the difference between the levels-symbol discrimination coefficient or color difference should be focused on.In addition,both of the two methods will be affected by other variables or application environment.This paper aims at the design of graphic symbol grading and color grading in the symbolized expression of statistical information for paper map,and studies their suitability under different conditions.The main contents include:(1)Comb the research status of graded symbol design and graded color design in graded design of symbolized expression of statistical information for paper map,and summarize the deficiencies of current research,such as,the effects of other symbol variables and application environment on the suitability of graded symbol design is not comprehensive,the study of color difference in graded color mainly in the electronic environment,and so on.(2)Discuss the theoretical system of graded design of symbolized expression.The visual effects of visual variables are analyzed and the size variables and their thresholds are determined.Determine the brightness and saturation variables that can be used for color grading,and comb the concept of color difference and its calculation formula.On this basis,the research method of grading suitability of symbolized expression of statistical information is discussed.According to the specific connotation of suitability,the evaluation method,evaluation index,evaluation model and index weight are designed.(3)Through the establishment of the size variable system of grading symbol,the cognitive experiment of graded symbol was designed,and the results of the cognitive experiment were analyzed by using the entropy weight Topsis method,so as to obtain the groups of graded symbol size with higher suitability under different conditions.(4)Design the cognitive experiment of color grading(brightness and saturation),and discuss the color difference pattern and parameter with higher suitability under different conditions by analyzing the results of the cognitive experiment;Then,the mathematical relationship between the added value of CMYK parameter and the color difference value of LAB model was explored,aiming at the CMYK color mode adopted by paper map and the LAB color mode for color difference calculation.The research shows that the symbol density has a great influence on the grading suitability of symbol.When the symbol color is high saturation,the background color level has a small effect on the suitability,while the hue has no obvious effect.The color difference pattern and parameter have a great influence on the color grading suitability,and they are slightly different in different color hue.However,the area and quantity of polygon of graded color have no obvious effect on the suitability.Based on the cognitive experiment results,this paper summarizes the size groups of graded symbol and color difference pattern and parameter of graded color with high suitability under different conditions,which can provide quantitative basis for graded design under similar conditions,thus guide the graded design of symbolized expression of statistical information for paper map.
