Abstract/Summary:
The Problem. The purpose of the study was to determine whether the grade point averages (GPAs), success rates and completion rates of mathematics classes increased after the introduction of mathematics placement examinations (MPEs).;An ex post facto design was utilized to determine the GPAs, success rates and completion rates of each of the three classes for the four-semester period before the introduction of the MPEs and the four-semester period after the introduction of the MPEs.;Results. The first three hypotheses, which predicted significant increases in the GPAs of Math 101, Math 102 and Math 103 were not supported. The sixth hypothesis, which predicted an increased success rate for Math 103 was not supported, nor was the ninth hypothesis, which predicted an increased completion rate for Math 103.;The fourth and fifth hypotheses, which predicted increases in the success rates of Math 101 and Math 102, respectively, were supported. The prediction of increased completion rates for Math 101 and Math 102 were also supported.;Method. The GPAs, success rates and completion rates of Math 101 (Intermediate Algebra), Math 102 (Trigonometry), and Math 103 (Calculus) were examined, since three different level MPEs were given.
