Abstract/Summary:
This thesis explores key factors that have created the opportunity for bankers' banks to become a correspondent services alternative for independent community banks. The history of correspondent banking is traced from the earliest years of our nation's history through 1991. The thesis analyzes the rise of bankers' banks within the correspondent banking industry during the past twenty years. It examines how bankers' banks have used the changing financial services environment to create a significant and growing niche within the correspondent banking industry in many states. Significant challenges facing bankers' banks in the future are examined for the opportunities they afford and the threats they represent.
